Eddie or Aladdin?

sweater: old navy   pant: gap    wedges: target    necklace: groopdealz

When thinking of a baby name I felt a lot of pressure, as you only get one shot and your kid is stuck with that name forever.  I knew we didn't pick a super common name, but did not think it was that unique.  However this last week one person told me that's "an interesting" name and another "that's really unique."  Which to me translate to "that's weird."

Plus some random caller (which I'm blaming Chris for when he wasted $15 signing up for some baby model search, which he is still waiting for Addilyn's claim to fame) left a message and said Addilyn's name three times and pronounced it uh - dell - in.

Thankfully I'm still pretty confident in our name for our daughter, as I can't imagine her as anything else.

But it made me think about how I was pretty convinced ten years ago that I'd name a girl Sophia and a boy Noah.  I also loved the name Ava.

Fortunate for me my mom made sure to point out that Ava Vale sounds ridiculous to spell.  a. v. a. v. a. l. e. Too many a's and v's.  And even worse than that I would've named my son Noah Vale.  Like to no avail.  Pathetically enough I think when she told me that I didn't even know what that meant.  Given I was probably only 21, but embarrassing nonetheless.

Thank goodness for my mom.

Now after Addi was born I learned that my dad had jokingly called her Eddie (before we had decided on that name for sure).  And my sister did once refer to Addilyn as Aladdin, but she was eight months pregnant and tired so I'm letting that go.

Did your mom ruin your baby name dreams (and okay, thankfully save your kids from future name calling)? Or did your family make fun of your baby names?

  1. i love the name addilyn (it's been on my baby name list no lie since i was 10!) And yes, my mom totally ruined my baby name dreams. I used to love the name Lola until my mom told me that Lola was a song about a stripper. lol

  2. I have a girl name all ready to go if the day comes. I have no idea about a boy name, though. It's so much pressure!

  3. My parents were going to name me Sanjana, but Sanjana Rajana is probably worse than Ava Vale! So many As, and Ns, and Js!

  4. I've always wanted to name a boy Jack. I just love it! But once I get married, I'll become a Russell. And I just can't ever imagine having a Jack Russell. :P

  6. I love the name Addilyn. It has been on my list of baby names for years.

When I was first born, my grandma told my mom that she didn't like my name and would never be able to spell it. My brother is named Douglas, and a lot of people questioned my mom's choice when she named him too. The nurse at the hospital told her it was too old fashioned of a name.

  7. Addilyn is a cute name and unique too! Love it, she's so adorable!

  8. Haha...yes...8 month pregnant ladies can say things and get away with it!

I love Addilyn's name. You chose well!

  9. I honestly have only heard "Addilyn" twice: on your blog and on a t.v. show last summer. I do like it!
We've had a boy name ready for awhile…but only one! We have a few girl first name/middle name combos stored away.
My child would have been named Ashlyn, had I been a teen mom (cringe).

  10. Such a fun post! When we were pregnant, before we knew we were having a girl I shared a few names with my mom and when I told her I really liked the name Aiden, she went "Oh no, not Aiden!" I couldn't believe it! So I told her that she wouldn't be knowing the name until our child was born because of that reaction. Luckily Mom loves the name Kendall. :)

  11. No one in my family really opposed the names we chose for our kids. My in-laws were not familiar with the name Gavin, and kept calling our second son "Garvin" for the first few weeks of his life. Also, my grandparents thought his name was Kevin. Any birthday card he received had the name Kevin on it. :)

  12. Had to laugh at the Noah Vale name! Last names can ruin first names. I really love the name Will for a boy, and was trying to convince Luke that it should be our boy name pick. Then he pointed out that the name would be William Wallace. Like from Braveheart (and history. haha). Which of course made the name more appealing to him, but I said no way!

  13. Uncommon name. I have not heard of it before. I named both my kids.

  14. Ha, aww I hate when names get ruined. I love the name Addilyn!! So cute! And not weird at all. As a teenager I was determined to name my daughters Scarlet and Violet--both pretty names but not my style anymore. My mom ruined my favorite boy name idea, but we had a girl, so it all worked out! At least for now..

  15. Addilyn is a beautiful name and a variation of it was on our girls list with Audrey.

We don't discuss names with people before baby is born. We made the mistake of mentioning a boy name last time I was pregnant and my dad told my mom she had to make sure we didn't name our child that. It was funny and annoying at the same time.

  16. I love the name Addilyn :) Naming a child is no small task. I was surprised by how hard it was to come up with a name with both agreed on. Thankfully, we didn't involve our family in the process...there'd be no pleasing anyone. After Maggie was born, my dad once referred to her as Molly which I thought was hilarious!

  17. Our last name is Hinners (pronounced like whiners). I love the name Sawyer, but everyone calls us the little hineys. One day, a best friend of mine said that it dawned on her that if we used Sawyer, he/she would get the joke Sawyer Hiney.... "Saw your hiney"....

  18. I seriously love Addilyn's name! And Addi is just an ever cuter nickname. But I wouldn't have caught the Ava or Noah Vale thing either hahaha... Aaron and I like unique but nothing like Apple or North haha... He is going to have to remind me that no matter what..it's OUR child's name :)

  19. My cousin has a daughter named Addilyn, so I don't think it is weird at all. I think it is lovely!

Of course, this is coming from some one who named her son Banner. It is a family name, but that didn't stop people from asking, "What? Was sign post and billboard already taken?"

  20. Isn't it funny how people have such strong opinions about names????

  21. henry and eva are both family names, so no one was able to make fun of them. however, a lot of people call eva "ava", and for some reason it bothers me a little. i'm always correcting them!!

  22. I always see "unique" as a good descriptor word. I like unique. Noah Vale did make me laugh, though. It's true, with shorter last names you have to make sure you don't end up with funny combos, and you also try to avoid and awkward combination of letters when it comes to the initials!

  23. yeah well everyone in our family HATED the name Jude...and they let us know too.lol.

Everyone will give you a reason why they don't like it or how it can be made fun of.

My Father-in-law was the most vocal about Jude and then told me the other day..he didn't like Lyla either...it grew on him and that Elisabeth was the only "normal" name we picked and it was "ok" ... LOL He then went on the talk about how ridiculous my nephews names were LOL....

P.S. I love addi's name and I also like the name Noah!

  25. I named my youngest Autumn Lynn but I wanted her name to be Autumn Rayne (Rain)

  26. I've always liked the name Emma until my mom pointed out that it's the most popular name... That definitely had me singing a different tune for what we'll name our first little girl.

  27. Our families were pretty neutral but J and I could not agree on a girl's name for the longest time. I wanted Ellis after my grandmother's maiden name and we could call her Ellie but it was pointed out that Ellie Pitts may not be the best choice. Luckily we didn't end up needing a girls name! I like Addilyn. It's pretty without being silly and will work when she's an adult.

  28. Her name is beautiful. It's funny how our last names can wreck first name ideas!!
